Engaged Education Initiatives

The Center for Large Pelagics has two educational initiatives, a Large Pelagics Technology Undergraduate Team Competition and a Graduate Fellowship Program. These initiatives are designed to engage undergraduate and graduate students to the interdisciplinary research needs of the large pelagics research and management communities. By bringing students and researchers together, these initiatives are intended to foster the development of the next generation of large pelagic animal researchers and managers.

Large Pelagics Technology Undergraduate Team Competition

The Large Pelagics Research Center sponsors an annual undergraduate research competition. Multi-disciplinary teams of undergraduates tackle specific problems associated with the development of new or existing technologies used in the study of large pelagic species. Research projects for the coming year’s competition are identified by the Center’s Advisory Board and may address one of the research priorities set forth in the Center’s RFP. Projects may be part of undergraduate thesis or cap-stone projects both at UNH or other Universities and Colleges. The Center provides funding for these projects and for travel to UNH in the spring for the student teams to square off in a friendly annual competition. Teams from UNH, MIT, UMASS-Dartmouth, UW-Milwakee and the USA Naval Academy are addressing the issue of external tag shedding and rentention.

Graduate Fellowship Program

When funding is avaialble, the Large Pelagics Research Center funds up to two Graduate Student Fellowships for new UNH students. The awarding of these fellowships is coordinated through the Marine Program. List of fellowship recipients.
